Position Overview

BBA is looking for a senior structural engineer with expertise in dams and hydropower. You’ll be the technical reference for detailed engineering and constructability in dam design and dam safety, with a primary focus on structural engineering aspects for concrete, steel and composite dam structures and ancillary facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to dam safety reviews and inspections to support technical reports, with an emphasis on structural performance and safety.
  • Support and lead detailed structural design and rehabilitation and upgrade engineering for dams and ancillary structures, including spillways, powerhouses, intake structures, penstocks, outlet works and gates.
  • Perform structural analysis and design of concrete and steel dam components, including static, dynamic, thermal and seismic analysis in accordance with applicable codes and CDA guidelines.
  • Prepare and review tender documents and construction packages and provide technical support during procurement.
  • Provide construction supervision and engineering support, including review of shop drawings, construction submittals and site inspections, as required.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior and intermediate engineers.
  • Participate in business development activities, including proposal preparation, technical writing, client presentations and participation in industry conferences and committees.

Qualifications

  • University degree in civil or structural engineering from a recognized university.
  • At least 15 years of relevant professional experience in hydropower engineering and dam safety.
  • Current registration as a professional engineer with EGM (or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated experience participating in at least three dam safety reviews.
  • Current knowledge of the Manitoba Dam Safety Regulation, CDA Dam Safety Guidelines and relevant international dam safety standards.
  • For mining dams, knowledge of regulations applicable to the Mines Act and the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines in Manitoba as well as CDA Dam Safety Guidelines.
  • Advanced knowledge in structural engineering related to dams and hydropower, including steel and concrete design, seismic design, codes, standards, procedures, safety and other regulatory requirements and guidelines.
  • Experience with structural analysis and design software such as SAP2000.
  • Excellent spoken and written English communication skills.
  • Ability to travel and perform site work where required.
  • Advanced English skills to facilitate collaboration with BBA offices and clients.
  • Advanced French skills to facilitate collaboration with BBA offices and clients in Québec.
  • Intermediate Spanish skills to facilitate collaboration with BBA offices and clients in South America.
