Overview:

ARCXIS is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager – Structural Engineering to own customer-facing structural engineering projects and programs from initial need through final sealed deliverables. This is a practicing Professional Engineer role combining direct customer engagement, scope definition, structural analysis and design, technical review, responsible charge, project delivery, and leadership of a small team that includes an Engineer-in-Training and a Designer. The Engineering Manager will support residential and related work across ARCXIS markets, including townhomes projects and evolving specialty engineering programs.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary engineering point of contact for assigned customers; promptly acknowledge requests, clarify expectations, and translate customer needs, construction information, schedule constraints, and field conditions into a defined engineering scope.
  • Develop proposals and scopes of service for structural work, estimate effort for new products and programs, and partner with Sales and Operations on customer onboarding, value engineering, sample projects, scheduling, delivery, and billing coordination.
  • Manage projects from kickoff through calculations, drawings, redline cycles, quality review, final delivery, and construction support; establish priorities and due dates with customers and internal scheduling teams.
  • Perform and direct competent structural analysis and design for residential and related construction, including wood framing, post-tensioned slabs, masonry, seismic and wind loading, and all components within the engineer’s demonstrated areas of competence.
  • Establish design criteria and prepare, review, and approve calculations, calculation packages, plans, details, engineering letters, structural loads, and other technical deliverables for accuracy, completeness, constructability, and code compliance.
  • Exercise responsible charge over engineering work; independently review every document issued under the engineer’s seal and sign and seal work only within applicable licensure and demonstrated competence.
  • Directly supervise an EIT and a Designer. Delegate work by project priority and capability, provide technical direction and redlines, review iterative work, manage capacity, coach performance, and build the team’s engineering judgment and technical skills.
  • Maintain a disciplined workflow for CAD setup, EIT engineering and markup cycles, manager review, corrections, rush work, QA/QC, and escalation of late or overloaded assignments.
  • Respond to field issues, permit comments, revisions, and customer escalations; coordinate with builders, architects, contractors, truss providers, geotechnical engineers, authorities having jurisdiction, and internal subject matter experts to resolve issues through completion.
  • Lead recurring customer and workload reviews, communicate project status and risk, and escalate schedule, scope, technical, or resource concerns early enough for corrective action.
  • Monitor and report quality, delivery, productivity, workload, backlog, and customer commitments using ARCXIS workflow systems and management routines; drive continuous improvement without compromising technical quality or professional responsibility.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities Include the Following:

  • Support recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, performance management, and development of engineering and design personnel.
  • Maintain organized project records, design assumptions, calculations, decisions, correspondence, commitments, and standards in approved company systems.
  • Visit project sites and customer locations as needed and perform other duties consistent with this customer-owning, sealing Engineering Manager role.

Requirements

Education, Experience and Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline from an accredited program.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required, with the ability to obtain additional state licenses by comity as customer and project needs require.
  • Demonstrated experience as a competent practicing structural engineer in residential or light-frame construction, including responsibility for work issued under the engineer’s seal.
  • Strong working knowledge of wood-frame design, foundations and post-tensioned slabs, structural load paths, wind and seismic design, applicable building codes, and structural design standards.
  • Experience independently evaluating customer requests, defining engineering scope, performing and reviewing calculations, directing preparation of drawings and details, and delivering final sealed documents.
  • Experience resolving field conditions, permit comments, design conflicts, revisions, and technical escalations with practical, constructible solutions.
  • Experience directing and mentoring EITs, designers, drafters, or other technical staff and maintaining accountability for their work product.
  • Strong customer-facing communication, project-management, prioritization, and organizational skills, including the ability to manage demanding clients and multiple concurrent commitments.
  • Experience with residential and townhomes/multiplex construction, West Region engineering, or multi-state builder accounts preferred.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis, calculation, PDF markup, CAD, and project/workflow management tools applicable to the role.

Supervisory Responsibility:

Direct supervisory responsibility for an Engineer-in-Training and a Designer, with responsibility for delegation, technical direction, workload, development, performance, quality, and delivery. Additional technical staff may be assigned as programs grow.
