Job Description

This is a remote position.

We are hiring on behalf of a UK-based software development agency with 10 years in the industry, currently serving clients in the UK manufacturing sector. You will join a small, senior team working directly with the agency lead. This is not a client-facing role as all client communication is handled by the agency, but you must be able to articulate technical ideas clearly and translate business requirements into engineering solutions with confidence.

The client values curiosity, engineering taste, and an AI-first mindset above years of experience or academic credentials. If you are the kind of engineer who experiments with AI tools, breaks down complex problems methodically, and genuinely enjoys the craft of building, this role is for you. This starts as a 2+ month contract with a strong potential to convert into a long-term engagement based on performance.

The Right Personality

  • You ask questions before writing code. Understanding the business problem matters as much as the solution.
  • You have a genuine curiosity about how things work and why, not just how to implement them.
  • You push back when something does not make sense. The client wants collaborators, not order takers.
  • You have a strong engineering taste. You care about doing things the right way, not just the fast way.
  • You can break a complex engineering challenge into clear, phased delivery without being told how.

Requirements

  • AI-native mindset. You actively experiment with and integrate AI tools into your daily development workflow. This is non-negotiable.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions. You think in problems, not just code.
  • Strong internal communication skills. You can explain complex technical ideas clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Engineering taste. Clean code, good architecture instincts, and a clear sense of when to build and when not to.
  • Python and Django in production.
  • JavaScript and TypeScript with React, Node.js, and Next.js in production.
  • Fast learner with genuine curiosity. The client values this more than a long CV.

Benefits

Nice to Have

• Manufacturing or industrial domain experience.

• jQuery experience.

• Experience working with or for a software development agency.

• Familiarity with UK business culture and working styles.

Strong Fit If You...

• Use AI tools daily and can show concrete examples of what you built with them.

• Are comfortable working in a small, senior team with minimal hand-holding.

• Communicate proactively and clearly in English, both in writing and on calls.

• Have shipped production applications end to end with minimal technical direction.

Not a Match If You...

• Use AI only for autocomplete with no real experimentation or integration experience.

• Need heavy technical direction or detailed specifications to get started.

• Are not comfortable working UK business hours.

• Cannot explain a technical decision in plain English to a non-technical person.
