Full Stack Developer - React / Python / AI-enabled Platform

Blake Oliver Consulting is supporting a specialist underwriting business as they build a new greenfield platform from the ground up.

This is not a role sitting inside a large, slow-moving legacy platform team. The business is building its own policy and underwriting platform, with AI, automation and data-driven decisioning being designed into the way work is done, rather than being bolted on later.

The role is fundamentally a hands-on full stack development position, working across React on the front end and Python on the back end. What makes it a little different is the level of ownership. You will not simply be handed a fully formed specification and asked to code in the background. You will be working closely with internal users, understanding how underwriting and back-office workflows operate, then helping build the features that support them.

The platform is already underway, with several products built or close to production. The next phase is about continuing to build at pace, improving the product through feedback, and reducing the manual data entry and repetitive work that sits around underwriting today.

What you’ll be doing

• Building features across a greenfield policy and underwriting platform
• Developing front-end functionality in React
• Building back-end services, APIs and data-handling logic in Python
• Working with users to understand workflow issues and turn them into practical product features
• Supporting AI-enabled use cases such as document processing, data extraction, summarisation and workflow automation
• Writing clean, maintainable and well-tested code
• Contributing to automated testing, regression coverage and CI/CD practices
• Supporting what you build once it is live, including fixes, refinements and BAU improvement
• Working in a small product engineering environment where people need to be comfortable wearing a few hats

What we’re looking for

• 3–5 years’ commercial software development experience
• Strong React experience, including responsive and maintainable UI development
• Strong Python experience across APIs, services and back-end logic
• Experience working with Docker and modern development practices
• Good understanding of automated testing and CI/CD
• Comfortable working in an iterative environment, where products are built, tested with users, improved and shipped again
• Able to work with a level of ambiguity and ask sensible questions rather than waiting for every detail to be written down
• Product mindset, meaning you care about the problem being solved, not just the ticket being completed

Experience in insurance is useful, but not essential. Experience in regulated environments such as financial services, fintech, lending, health or similar would also be relevant.

Infrastructure-as-code, cloud platform exposure and experience with tools such as Bicep, Terraform, Azure, AWS or GCP would be beneficial, but they are not the core requirement for this role.

Why this role

This is a good option for a developer who wants more ownership than a standard delivery role, without moving away from just hands-on engineering.

You will be joining early enough to help shape the way the platform is built, but not so early that you are dealing with a blank piece of paper and no direction. The work is practical, close to the users, and focused on building features that people in the business will actually use.

The team is small, flexible and moving quickly. The working model is genuinely flexible, with a preference for candidates based on the eastern seaboard who can occasionally attend workshops in Sydney or Brisbane when needed.
