We're looking for a senior Java developer to lead a small team in both supporting an existing application and building its future state. The role centres on migrating a legacy Java/WebSphere application to a modern Spring Boot API and Angular UI, including a database migration from DB2 to AWS Aurora. Strong Java fundamentals are essential - this is a technically demanding lead role in a claims and billing domain.
What you'll do
- Lead a team of four developers across application support and new development workstreams
- Support the existing Java application built on WebSphere using the Spring Framework with JMS
- Drive the migration to a Spring Boot API and Angular UI architecture
- Oversee the database migration from DB2 to AWS Aurora as part of the modernization effort
- Design and implement RESTful APIs ensuring seamless integration between frontend and backend systems
- Apply best practices in software architecture, design patterns, and object-oriented programming
- Champion unit testing and test-driven development practices using JUnit and Mockito
- Contribute to performance optimization, profiling, and debugging of Java applications
- Manage code quality and collaboration through Git-based version control workflows
What you bring
- Strong core Java fundamentals including a solid understanding of object-oriented principles, data structures (HashMaps, Sets, and their underlying mechanics), IoC principles, and Java bean lifecycle management
- Deep knowledge of the Spring Framework including dependency injection and application lifecycle, with hands-on Spring Boot experience
- Experience with RESTful API design and implementation
- Familiarity with unit testing frameworks including JUnit and Mockito
- Experience with containerization and orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes
- Working knowledge of Git for version control and team collaboration
- Prior experience in claims or billing domain applications is an asset
- Eligibility for a mandatory background check
Nice to have
- Hands-on experience with AWS Aurora or other cloud-managed database services
- Familiarity with Angular for frontend integration
- Experience migrating legacy WebSphere or XML-based Spring applications to modern Spring Boot architectures
