Java Backend Developer

Iris’s client, one of the Top 5 Bank in Canada is looking to hire a Java Backend Developer for a long term contract opportunity.

Our Client is a CANADA multinational financial services company and the largest bank in Canada by market capitalization. The bank serves over 17 million clients and has more than 89,000 employees worldwide. Bank is serving individual consumers, small and middle market businesses and large corporations with a full range of banking, investing, asset management and other financial and risk-management products and services.

Position: Java Backend Developer

Location: Toronto, ON (Hybrid)

Duration: 12+ Months

Domain: Banking

Must Have:

• Functional Programming, Java Spring Boot, Kafka, MQ, MongoDB.

Core Technologies:

• Java 21 with modern language features (records, pattern matching, sealed types)
• Spring Boot for application framework
• Apache Camel for integration and routing patterns
• Camunda 8.7 / Scala for workflow orchestration
• MongoDB for persistence
• Apache Kafka & IBM MQ for messaging
• Vavr for functional programming (Option, Either, Try)

Architectural Experience:

• Clean Architecture / Hexagonal Architecture (Ports & Adapters)
• Multi-module Gradle projects
• Domain-driven design with immutable domain models
• Event-driven and reactive programming patterns
• Type-safe domain modeling (avoiding primitive obsession)

Testing Excellence:

• JUnit 5 with parameterized tests
• Property-based testing (Jqwik)
• BDD with Cucumber
• AssertJ, Mockito, Testcontainers, Awaitility
• Strong commitment to 90%+ code coverage & shift left practices

Code Quality:

• Experience with Spotless, Spotbugs, Checkstyle, SonarQube
• CI/CD with GitHub Actions
• Container-based deployments (Docker)

Domain Knowledge (Preferred):

• Real-Time Payments (RTP) or payment processing systems
• ISO 20022 messaging standards
• Financial services or highly regulated environments
• Core banking system integrations
