Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced Senior Java Engineer to join a large-scale technology environment within the banking and financial services sector.
You will join a highly skilled engineering team responsible for developing and modernising a high-performance, scalable platform used across multiple international markets.
The immediate focus will involve migrating an existing frontend delivery/controller service onto a modern Java and Spring Boot architecture, while improving scalability, automation, security and production reliability.
This is a hands-on engineering position where you will be involved across the complete software development lifecycle, from technical refinement and solution design through development, deployment, monitoring and production support.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain highly scalable Java applications and services.
- Work extensively with Java 21+ and Spring Boot.
- Design and develop solutions within a microservices architecture.
- Build and maintain REST APIs and asynchronous/event-driven integrations.
- Work extensively with Kafka for distributed communication.
- Participate across the full development lifecycle from refinement through to production monitoring.
- Develop and maintain automated CI/CD pipelines.
- Deploy and support containerised applications using OpenShift and Kubernetes.
- Work with both SQL and NoSQL databases.
- Monitor application performance, capacity and availability.
- Troubleshoot complex application, infrastructure and production issues.
- Contribute to application security, operational risk controls and technical documentation.
- Participate in incident management and production support.
- Participate in an on-call rotation approximately once every 4–8 weeks.
- Support other engineers through knowledge sharing, technical guidance and engineering best practices.
- Contribute to technical roadmaps, architectural discussions and continuous improvement initiatives.

- Experience with Cassandra.
- Performance testing experience, particularly Gatling.
- Experience with Checkmarx or similar application security tooling.
- Strong understanding of automated testing and test automation.
- Experience building continuous delivery and deployment processes.
- Experience with Azure Repos, Azure Pipelines and Azure Artifacts.
- Experience establishing engineering standards and best practices.
- Previous experience within banking, financial services or another highly regulated environment.
- Experience delivering workshops, technical presentations and engineering documentation.
Ideal Candidate
You will be a senior-level engineer who combines strong hands-on Java development skills with a broader understanding of architecture, infrastructure, security and production operations.
You should be comfortable working within complex distributed environments, taking ownership of services from development through to production and collaborating with engineers, architects, product teams and other technical stakeholders.
Strong communication skills, an automation-first mindset and the ability to quickly understand unfamiliar technical concepts will be important for success in this position.
