Overview
We are seeking a Senior Linux on Z / LinuxONE Engineer to support enterprise clients in designing, implementing, optimizing, and modernizing Linux environments running on IBM Z and LinuxONE platforms. This role requires deep technical expertise in Linux on IBM Z architecture, enterprise infrastructure integration, and customer-facing consulting engagements.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience delivering Linux on Z/LinuxONE solutions in large-scale enterprise environments and will be comfortable leading technical discussions, architecture reviews, migrations, and implementation projects for customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and support Linux on IBM Z and LinuxONE environments for enterprise customers.
- Lead client engagements focused on Linux modernization, platform optimization, migration, and infrastructure transformation initiatives.
- Architect highly available, secure, and scalable Linux solutions leveraging IBM Z and LinuxONE technologies.
- Integrate Linux on Z environments with enterprise infrastructure components including storage, networking, security, identity management, and automation platforms.
- Provide technical leadership during customer workshops, discovery sessions, assessments, and implementation projects.
- Support migration initiatives from distributed Linux environments to LinuxONE and IBM Z platforms.
- Configure, administer, and optimize Linux operating systems including Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES), and Ubuntu on IBM Z.
- Collaborate with mainframe, middleware, application, and infrastructure teams to ensure successful deployment and integration of solutions.
- Implement automation, monitoring, performance tuning, and operational best practices.
- Create technical documentation, architecture diagrams, implementation guides, and operational procedures.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to enterprise customers and provide knowledge transfer to client teams.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience supporting Linux on IBM Z and/or LinuxONE environments.
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
- z/VM
- 10+ years of overall Linux systems engineering or architecture experience.
- Strong hands-on experience with Linux distributions running on IBM Z, including:
- SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES)
- Ubuntu for IBM Z
- Deep understanding of IBM Z and LinuxONE architecture.
- Experience working with virtualization technologies including:
- KVM on IBM Z/LinuxONE
- Strong knowledge of enterprise networking, storage, and security concepts.
- Experience integrating Linux on Z environments with enterprise applications and infrastructure services.
- Experience performing system installation, configuration, upgrades, migration, troubleshooting, and performance tuning.
- Strong customer-facing consulting and technical leadership experience.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and documentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Z and LinuxONE.
- Experience with containers, Kubernetes, and cloud-native platforms.
- Knowledge of IBM Storage solutions and enterprise backup/recovery technologies.
- Experience with automation tools such as Ansible, Terraform, and scripting languages.
- Familiarity with IBM Z technologies including:
- RACF
- CICS
- Db2
- MQ
- Experience supporting hybrid cloud and multi-platform environments.
- Previous IBM Expert Labs, IBM Consulting, or enterprise professional services experience.
- IBM Z, LinuxONE, Red Hat, or OpenShift certifications.
Desired Background
- Proven track record delivering enterprise consulting engagements rather than solely internal operational support.
- Experience working directly with customer stakeholders, architects, infrastructure teams, and executive sponsors.
- Ability to lead technical workstreams independently and provide strategic guidance on Linux on Z adoption and modernization initiatives.
