Manager Engineering

POSITION SUMMARY: The Manager Engineering is responsible for implementation of functional directives related to environmental programs, regulatory compliance, and training and support for Republic Services field teams. The incumbent will work closely with engineering teams and leadership to support their assigned areas of work including environmental systems and due diligence of potential acquisitions, Air & Gas projects, landfill capital management, and engineering budget planning. The Manager Engineering will work cross functionally and communicate with senior management in departments across corporate and the field, including Business Development, Operations Support, Innovation and Sustainability, and Finance regarding metrics measurement, trend analysis, and action plan execution.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Actively monitors data gaps and trends to work with functional and field teams to address anomalies. Manage data collection and develop training for field teams and consultants.
  • Works closely with field and finance teams to provide month-end statistics. Creates and distributes performance trending data and insights.
  • Assist operations and engineering teams with identification and assessment of landfill leachate wastewater treatment project opportunities and cost savings opportunities.
  • Coordinate with field teams, corporate teams, and third-party environmental consultants to manage performance of environmental due diligence on potential acquisition assets. Provide guidance on identified liabilities, remedial options and estimated completion timelines.
  • Communicate regularly with stakeholders on acquisition teams regarding status of investigation and resolution.
  • Oversee landfill gas program ensuring daily flow data uploads to gas database. Develop gas dashboards for visibility into KPIs.
  • Assist operations and engineering teams with identification and assessment of landfill gas projects and cost savings opportunities. Coordinate with field teams to provide guidance on construction projects for landfill cells and sites including capacity calculations, scheduling/timeline, and resource and material coordination.
  • Maintain financial responsibility for construction and wastewater treatment plant development, closure/post-closure, engineering, operations, and cost tracking. Assist with financial tracking of acquisition related environmental diligence expenditures.
  • Drive the development of onboarding and ongoing skill development training for field-based staff.
  • Develop and communicate standards, policies, procedures, best management practices, directives, and strategies related to wastewater treatment facilities and management of gas systems.
  • Monitor emerging issues in environmental regulatory requirements. Participate in developing the company's response to new or changing regulations on a regional and national basis.
  • This position may require periodic travel to conduct site visits supporting the field operations teams.
  • Performs other responsibilities and projects as assigned or apparent.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of operations, engineering, and/or environmental compliance and remediation functions.
  • Ability to identify issues, weigh options, and provide effective counsel to support sound business decisions.
  • Thorough knowledge of landfill gas systems and/or landfill leachate (industrial wastewater) processes.
  • Knowledge of environmental site assessment process, related environmental due diligence, remediation of properties, and permit compliance.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Effective written and verbal communication with the ability to influence and build credibility across various levels of the organization, with representatives of government agencies, and consultants/vendors.
  • Ability to understand business implications of decisions and can align work with strategic goals.
  • Ability to effectively present information to diverse audiences, including executive leadership and regulatory agencies.
  • Effectively manages multiple tasks, projects, and deadlines.
  • Ability to motivate, coach, and teach at all levels of the organization.
  • Proficient Excel skills (Macros, Pivot tables, etc.).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • 4-7 years of experience in solid waste management, environmental compliance, industrial wastewater, landfill gas, or other related environmental and/or engineering experience.

  • Environmental Management experience
  • Experience designing landfills or gas systems

This is an in-office position in Phoenix, AZ. 4 days in office, 1 day remote each week.
