The Maintenance Technician / Millwright Apprentice is responsible for the maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, installation, and optimization of production machinery, mechanical systems, and facility equipment to support safe, reliable, and efficient manufacturing operations. This hybrid role combines industrial maintenance responsibilities with hands‑on millwright apprenticeship development.
Reporting to the Maintenance Lead, Production Manager, and/or designated Journeyperson Millwright, the incumbent performs preventive maintenance, emergency repairs, equipment installations, mechanical rebuilds, precision alignments, and troubleshooting of mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and basic electrical systems.
The successful candidate will contribute to reducing equipment downtime, improving reliability, supporting continuous improvement initiatives, and developing advanced mechanical trade skills while working independently and under qualified trade supervision.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Preventative Maintenance
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on production machinery, mechanical systems, and facility equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications, maintenance schedules, and operational requirements.
- Inspect and service motors, pumps, conveyors, bearings, chains, belts, gearboxes, rollers, shafts, couplings, pneumatic systems, and hydraulic components to identify wear, damage, leaks, or potential failures.
- Complete routine maintenance activities including lubrication, cleaning, adjustments, tightening, component replacement, and equipment servicing.
- Monitor equipment performance for signs of failure, including abnormal vibration, overheating, excessive wear, pressure loss, or unusual operating conditions.
- Utilize diagnostic tools such as vibration analyzers, thermal imaging equipment, and precision measuring tools to identify potential equipment issues.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, repair documentation, equipment history, and parts usage reports.
- Coordinate maintenance activities with production teams to minimize operational disruption.
- Maintain appropriate inventory levels of critical spare parts, tools, and maintenance supplies.
- Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and operational failures to restore production capabilities and minimize downtime.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and basic electrical issues affecting production equipment.
- Remove, repair, rebuild, or replace defective components including motors, bearings, gearboxes, belts, chains, valves, sensors, and drive assemblies.
- Troubleshoot conveyor systems, rotating equipment, and automated machinery.
- Complete root cause analysis and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurring failures.
- Coordinate with production teams and management regarding repair status, timelines, and operational impacts.
- Escalate major repairs requiring specialized vendors or contractors.
- Perform post-repair testing to verify equipment operates safely and effectively.
- Assist with installation, relocation, dismantling, and commissioning of production machinery and facility equipment.
- Interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, schematics, manuals, and manufacturer specifications.
- Install and assemble motors, conveyors, pumps, gearboxes, rollers, pneumatic systems, and hydraulic components.
- Conduct equipment startup testing, operational checks, and adjustments.
- Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and internal departments during equipment upgrades and modifications.
- Perform mechanical disassembly, inspection, repair, and rebuilding of machinery components.
- Replace worn or damaged components including bearings, shafts, seals, bushings, couplings, sprockets, and drive systems.
- Perform repairs and rebuilds of hydraulic and pneumatic components.
- Support fabrication, welding, and equipment modification activities as required.
Machine Calibration & Alignments
- Perform shaft alignment, pulley alignment, conveyor tracking, equipment leveling, and mechanical adjustments.
- Utilize precision measurement tools including calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, feeler gauges, and alignment equipment.
- Verify equipment tolerances during installation, repair, and rebuild activities.
- Adjust machinery positioning and drive systems to improve performance and prevent premature wear.
Technical Support & Troubleshooting
- Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and control system issues impacting production operations.
- Assist with diagnosing PLC‑related issues, sensors, limit switches, motor controls, and automation components.
- Utilize diagnostic equipment including multimeters, pressure gauges, infrared thermometers, and vibration analysis tools.
- Perform root cause analysis on recurring equipment failures and recommend improvements.
- Provide technical support to production employees regarding equipment operation, adjustments, and safe operating practices.
- Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, reduce downtime, and increase maintenance efficiency.
- Work under the direction of a Journeyperson Millwright, Maintenance Lead, or senior technician to develop trade skills and technical knowledge.
- Participate in hands‑on training involving rigging, hoisting, mechanical fitting, precision alignment, equipment rebuilds, and troubleshooting.
- Maintain apprenticeship records, training documentation, and required trade progression records.
- Develop knowledge of industrial mechanical systems, equipment tolerances, repair procedures, and industry standards.
Safety Compliance
- Comply with all Company safety policies, procedures, and applicable legislation, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), PPE requirements, hazard assessments, and machine guarding standards.
- Complete hazard assessments prior to maintenance, repair, and installation activities.
- Ensure equipment is properly isolated and verified safe before performing work.
- Maintain awareness of workplace hazards including stored energy, moving equipment, electrical risks, pinch points, and elevated work areas.
- Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, inspections, and investigations as required.
- Immediately report hazards, near misses, equipment deficiencies, and unsafe conditions.
- Promote a strong safety culture and compliance within maintenance and production operations.
Documentation & Reporting
- Complete maintenance logs, work orders, inspection reports, and repair documentation accurately and promptly.
- Record equipment failures, troubleshooting activities, repairs completed, parts used, and downtime information.
- Maintain accurate equipment service records to support preventive maintenance planning and audits.
- Assist with maintenance reviews, inspections, and equipment performance assessments.
- Provide recommendations regarding equipment reliability, replacement needs, cost savings, and continuous improvement opportunities.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum five (5) years of industrial or manufacturing maintenance experience preferred.
- Registered Millwright Apprentice preferred, or willingness to pursue apprenticeship registration.
- Strong knowledge of industrial mechanical systems, conveyors, pumps, motors, and rotating equipment.
- Experience with bearings, gearboxes, chains, belts, and mechanical assemblies.
- Mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and basic electrical troubleshooting experience.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) considered an asset.
- Familiarity with PLC systems and industrial controls considered an asset.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a manufacturing environment.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, overtime, weekends, and on‑call schedules as required to support production operations.
