Job Description:
The Senior Engineer is a technical authority and project engineer for electrical distribution systems that support steam generation. They are responsible for independent engineering decision making and capital project execution to ensure safe, reliable, and compliant plant operation. This role combines strong electrical engineering expertise with full project ownership, including scope development, budgeting, scheduling, vendor management, and commissioning.
The individual supports steam and gas generating assets, with a focus on electrical systems and power distribution within the plant. This role applies engineering judgment across generators, transformers, switchgear, breakers, and protective relays, and will perform or review key power system studies to support system reliability and performance.
The role requires strong design basis discipline, experience in regulated utility or heavy industrial environments, and the ability to identify and escalate engineering risks early. The Senior Engineer partners closely with Operations, Maintenance, Project Managers, and Engineering teams, supports outages and field execution, ensures compliance with reliability and regulatory requirements (including NERC), and produces clear, defensible engineering documentation.
Key Responsibilities
• Serve as technical decision maker for electrical systems within generating stations
• Perform or review power system studies (load flow, short circuit, arc flash, relay coordination)
• Support electrical equipment sizing and system performance analysis
• Lead capital projects from scope through commissioning, managing schedule, budget, and funding
• Develop and review engineering analyses, drawings, technical specs, and purchase specifications
• Evaluate bids, vendor submittals, and contractor deliverables
• Ensure compliance with regulatory, reliability, and design requirements (e.g., NERC, NEC, NFPA)
• Support audits, inspections, outages, and field execution
• Clearly communicate technical decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
MUST HAVES:
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering – EE with heavy focus on power, mid EE and power and exp w projects
• 8+ years of experience in power generation, utilities, or heavy industrial environments
• Experience with electrical power systems (generators, transformers, switchgear, relays)
• Exposure to power system studies (load flow, short circuit, arc flash, or coordination)
• Experience leading engineering projects with scope, schedule, and budget responsibility
• Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and one-line diagrams
• Proven ability to perform independent analysis and exercise sound engineering judgment
• Experience supporting NERC compliance or reliability activities
PLUSSES:
• Familiarity with power system tools (ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, or similar) – HEAVILY Preferred
• Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or working toward licensure
• Experience with vendor management, purchase specifications, and equipment upgrades
• Working knowledge of IEEE, NFPA, NEC, and industry standards
