About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Python Developer to join a long-term technology initiative within the energy sector in Brussels.

You will contribute to the architecture, development, optimization, and maintenance of resilient software solutions supporting critical business operations. The primary focus will be an internal monitoring platform responsible for application health monitoring, synthetic and log-based checks, alerting, and timely notification of operational issues.

The platform's core monitoring and alerting engines are developed in Python, together with the associated monitoring scripts.

You will work closely with software development teams, Product Owners, Business Analysts, Data Engineers, Architects, IT Operations, and business stakeholders.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, enhance, and optimize Python-based backend applications and services.
  • Contribute to the evolution and reliability of monitoring and alerting solutions.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into software specifications.
  • Develop maintainable, scalable, secure, and high-performing solutions.
  • Implement best practices around code quality, automated testing, CI/CD, and deployment.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve complex technical and application issues.
  • Work closely with DevOps and Data Engineering teams to ensure seamless integration and performance.
  • Participate in code reviews and mentor junior developers.
  • Support the improvement and refactoring of existing/legacy code.
  • Engage with internal customers to address service requests and ensure effective resolution.


Required Experience & Technical Skills

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in an IT/technology-related field.
  • 6+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Minimum 3+ years of hands-on Python development experience.
  • Strong Python backend development skills, ideally using FastAPI or a comparable framework.
  • Experience with Pydantic or similar data-validation libraries.
  • Hands-on experience with AsyncIO / asynchronous Python development.
  • Strong SQL knowledge.
  • Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL and/or Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Experience with RabbitMQ and messaging technologies.
  • Strong understanding of service-based architectures and event-driven systems.
  • Solid knowledge of software design patterns, data structures, algorithms, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Knowledge of test automation frameworks, such as Selenium.
  • Understanding of CI/CD and continuous integration practices.
  • Ability to work with existing/legacy applications and contribute to structured refactoring initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of IT security requirements and secure software implementation, ideally within critical infrastructure or similarly regulated environments.
  • Experience working within Agile development environments.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership, mentoring, and code-review support.


Nice to Have

  • Experience with Microsoft Azure.
  • Experience with NoSQL databases/solutions.
  • Experience with Docker/containerization.
  • Experience with automated CI/CD deployment pipelines.
  • Previous experience with application monitoring, alerting, logging, or observability platforms.
  • Experience within energy, utilities, critical infrastructure, or other highly regulated environments.
