Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET)
Target profile: JavaScript/TypeScript SDET with Playwright + API Automation + React + some Java/Spring Boot exposure.
Duration: 6mo initial contract (extendable)
Location: Toronto or K/W area - remote for now, occasional visit or light hybrid is possible in future
Rate: 60/hr, incorporated
Main Deliverables
- Modernize legacy advisor-facing web applications and tools.
- Develop and maintain automated end-to-end, API, and integration tests.
- Support feature development as both an SDET and software engineer.
- Ensure quality throughout the software development lifecycle within Agile teams.
- Contribute to CI/CD test automation and end-to-end system integration.

Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in software engineering and software quality engineering.
- Proven experience developing and testing modern web applications, APIs, and web services.
- Strong hands-on experience designing, implementing, and maintaining automated end-to-end test frameworks.
- Expertise in API test automation for REST services, including mocking and service virtualization.
- Strong JavaScript/TypeScript development skills, including modern ES6+ features.
- Practical experience with Java and Spring Boot REST APIs.
- Strong knowledge of React, React Router, HTML5, and CSS3.
- Experience testing Single Page Applications (SPA), including client-side routing, asynchronous rendering, and state management.
- Ability to plan test coverage for critical user journeys, regression testing, accessibility testing (WCAG/ARIA), and edge-case validation.
- Experience investigating defects across UI, API, middleware, and database layers.
- Knowledge of CI/CD automation and troubleshooting unstable/flaky tests.
- Experience querying MongoDB for test setup and validation.
- Strong understanding of HTTP protocols, REST APIs, Fetch/Axios, headers, authentication, and status codes.
- Experience with web application security principles and OWASP guidelines.
- Hands-on experience using GitHub Copilot and AI-assisted development tools.
- Experience working with AI agents and agent orchestration platforms.
- Working knowledge of Large Language Models (LLMs) and prompt engineering concepts.
Responsibilities
- Develop automated testing solutions for web applications, APIs, and integrated systems.
- Build and maintain end-to-end test suites aligned with quality engineering best practices.
- Collaborate with developers to validate new features and drive quality throughout delivery.
- Execute functional, regression, accessibility, and integration testing.
- Analyze failures and determine root cause across front-end, API, and data layers.
- Investigate logs, trace requests, and validate application behavior across distributed systems.
- Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines and improve test reliability.
- Validate security, performance, and scalability considerations where applicable.
- Contribute code and quality solutions during feature development.
- Support Agile delivery teams in continuously improving software quality and test coverage.
