About the Role
This role is responsible for leading all environmental, health, safety, and engineering operations within the site, while ensuring strong legal, statutory, and governance oversight for EHS, plant, machinery, utilities, facilities, maintenance, and capital delivery. This position ensures the site is meeting global and local environmental, health and safety requirements; that engineering projects are executed effectively; that utilities and facilities are maintained to ensure safety, compliance, and productivity; and that OT/IT infrastructure, cybersecurity compliance, and production system maintenance enable reliable production. The role requires a leader who can combine technical depth with sound business fundamentals, commercial acumen, and strategic thinking to support site performance, cost competitiveness, compliance, risk management, productivity, and long‑term growth.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Management
- Lead the EHS and Engineering team of 20-50 people to deliver against the Site Objectives: vision setting, objective setting, execution coaching, evaluation of progress, staffing, team engagement, and career coaching.
Site Safety Management
- Have duty holder understanding of the environmental, health, and safety standards to ensure governance, systems, and processes meet global and local standards.
- Staff the EHS and W team with sufficient skills and execution on high‑hazard systems.
- Coach site EHS leader on safety cultural programs that ensure safety is owned by everyone in the site.
Legal, Statutory and Governance Accountability
- Ensure the site meets South African EHS and engineering legal requirements: OHS Act, environmental obligations, plant and machinery compliance, utilities, facilities, contractor safety, emergency preparedness, and statutory inspections.
- Provide oversight of statutory appointments and legal duty holders, including GMR2.1 machinery supervision, legal registers, permits, risk assessments, incident investigations, corrective actions, and compliance records.
- Ensure compliance risks are identified, escalated, and closed with clear ownership, evidence, and governance.
Engineering and Capital Project Management Leadership
- Lead the site capital systems and project team to deliver projects with excellence – delivering on cost, schedule, safety/quality, OEE, and other business criteria.
- Ensure financial management of projects meets financial compliance expectations.
- Support defining investments that enable the site objectives: savings, growth and compliance.
Automation / OT / IT Management
- Ensure execution of maintenance and cybersecurity of the OT infrastructure and install automation technology needed to deliver site productivity and growth goals at the lowest OPEX.
Business Fundamentals and Commercial Acumen
- Translate site strategy and business priorities into practical EHS and Engineering plans that improve safety, quality, service, cost, compliance, reliability and productivity.
- Demonstrate sound financial discipline managing budgets, capital investment, maintenance spend, asset lifecycle decisions, savings delivery, and ROI.
- Use data, performance metrics, risk‑based decision making and cross‑functional collaboration to support business continuity, operational resilience, and sustainable site growth.
Utilities / Facilities / Maintenance Management
- Lead resources responsible for maintenance of utilities, facilities and production equipment to eliminate major breakdowns and keep ongoing system maintenance at 4‑5% of planned production time.
Future‑Focused Engineering and World‑Class Manufacturing
- Lead the site’s engineering roadmap toward a world‑class manufacturing facility by progressing automation, digital manufacturing, smart maintenance, energy efficiency, asset reliability, data‑enabled decision making, and future‑fit manufacturing technologies.
- Identify and implement scalable engineering solutions that improve OEE, reduce losses, strengthen compliance, enable capacity growth and support introduction of new technologies and production platforms.
- Build a culture of engineering excellence, innovation, continuous improvement and disciplined execution to move the site toward benchmark performance in safety, quality, service, cost, people capability and sustainability.
Collaborate with SLT and Global Resources to Deliver QSC Excellence
- Continuous Improvement – regularly look for manufacturing improvements to deliver site business needs.
- Stakeholder Communication – regularly communicate progress, challenges and successes to Site Leader, prepare and present reports, facilitate sub‑team meetings and ensure transparency and alignment across the organization.
- Risk Management – identify and manage risks associated with EHS and Engineering, conduct risk assessments, develop mitigation strategies and ensure compliance with relevant regulations and company policies.
Qualifications and Skills
Essential
- 4‑year university degree in Engineering.
- Government Certificate of Competency (GCC), required or actively progressing toward certification, in line with site statutory requirements.
- Must meet the requirements for GMR2.1 appointment, including the appropriate engineering competence, statutory understanding and effective supervision of machinery in line with South African legal requirements.
Preferred
- Master’s in Engineering.
- 10 years in manufacturing Engineering and EHS.
- Experience holding or supporting statutory engineering, machinery, EHS or duty‑holder appointments in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing cost drivers, capital governance, operational performance, asset reliability and business case development.
Other Skills / Qualifications
- Understanding of manufacturing, packing and warehouse technology; industry standards for project management and capital systems management; and EHS local and corporate standards.
- Understanding of business strategies and how to translate them into objectives for Engineering and EHS.
- Ability to translate innovation and growth requirements into safety and quality compliant equipment solutions that meet business timing and cost.
- Ability to define engineering solutions to business challenges at target cost and schedule, OT cybersecurity threats, natural disaster emergency response and BCP execution, and equipment productivity losses preventing production downtime.
- Innovation required to develop new equipment options to meet capacity growth, new production introductions and resolution of chronic production outages.
- Ability to develop and execute a future technology roadmap, including automation, digital systems, predictive maintenance, energy optimisation, smart utilities and modern manufacturing practices that support world‑class performance.
