Software Development Manager II, Embedded Systems/Firmware

About the job

Software Engineering Managers at Google combine deep technical expertise with leadership to manage teams of engineers across multiple locations. In this role you will lead a team that develops low‑level device drivers, Hardware Abstraction Layers (HALs), and boot code for multi‑processor platforms running Android/Linux or real‑time operating systems. Your team will work closely with cross‑functional partners to enable key platform functionality, improve system performance, and reduce power consumption.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage a team of embedded software engineers in the Waterloo office.
  • Maintain a psychologically safe environment, coach, and develop people’s careers while aligning tasks with broader organizational goals.
  • Define the technical direction for the Glasses Board Support Package (BSP) software.
  • Align with key partners and stakeholders, ensuring clear communication and delivery of multi‑quarter software projects.
  • Navigate new requirements, balance team workload, and deliver projects for internal and external stakeholders in a dynamic environment.

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of overall software development experience.
  • 3 years of experience with embedded operating systems.
  • 2 years of experience leading people, supervising or managing a team.
  • Hands‑on experience in C or C++.

Preferred qualifications

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science or related field.
  • 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization.
  • Strong knowledge of Android platform development or MCU RTOS systems.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills, attention to detail, and project management capabilities.

Compensation

Canada base salary range: CAD 216,000–221,000 + bonus + equity + benefits.
