Description of the team
The Insights Engine is Investec's enterprise Machine Learning (ML) platform, providing the software capabilities that enable teams across the bank to build, deploy and operate machine learning applications at scale.
As a strategic engineering capability, the Insights Engine is transforming how ML is delivered across the bank. Rather than building one-off machine learning solutions, the team engineers reusable platform capabilities that power multiple ML products across diverse business domains. This is an opportunity to solve complex engineering challenges spanning cloud-native platforms, distributed systems, APIs, event-driven architectures and enterprise-scale software that will underpin the future of ML at Investec.
The Insights Engine sits within the PB Data team, which serves as a strategic partner to the Private Bank. The team owns the engineering platform supporting the end-to-end ML lifecycle—from data ingestion and feature engineering through model deployment, integration, observability and continuous improvement—providing the foundational capabilities that enable ML across the business
Role Overview
As a Software Engineer within the Insights Engine, you will build and evolve the software capabilities that power Investec's enterprise Machine Learning platform. Working across the platform stack, you will design, develop, test and operate reusable services that enable model deployment, feature engineering, decision services, APIs and integration with organization's applications.
You will apply modern software engineering practices to deliver secure, scalable and resilient cloud-native services, leveraging automation, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code and observability to support reliable software delivery and operations.
Working alongside Data Scientists, Data Engineers and Architects, you will contribute to the ongoing evolution of the Insights Engine, enabling teams across the bank to build, deploy and operate ML solutions efficiently and at scale
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, test and operate secure, scalable, cloud-native software systems that power Investec's enterprise Machine Learning platform
- Build and evolve reusable platform services for the end-to-end AI/ML lifecycle, including feature management, model registration, deployment, inference, decision making and continuous improvement
- Develop distributed backend components, event-driven services and APIs that integrate AI/ML capabilities into business applications and digital channels.
- Engineer and deploy containerized software on Microsoft Azure using modern DevOps practices, including automated testing, CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code.
- Implement observability, monitoring, logging, telemetry and operational diagnostics to ensure production systems are resilient, fault tolerant and supportable
- Collaborate with Data Scientists, Data Engineers and Architects to evolve the Insights Engine platform, engineering standards and its integration across Investec's technology landscape.
Minimum Qualifications and Knowledge
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Engineering or a related technical discipline.
- 3 or more years of experience building backend, cloud-native or platform engineering solutions using modern software engineering practices.
- Strong proficiency in Python, with experience designing, developing, testing and maintaining software.
- Experience designing and building distributed systems, microservices, APIs and event-driven architectures that are secure, scalable and resilient.
- Experience developing and deploying containerised applications on Microsoft Azure using Docker, Kubernetes or Azure Container Apps, together with modern DevOps practices.
- Practical experience implementing automated testing, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, observability, monitoring, logging and operational support for production systems.
Advantageous
- Exposure to Machine Learning platforms, MLOps or AI engineering.
- Experience building data-intensive or event-driven platforms.
- Microsoft Azure certifications (e.g. AZ-204, AZ-305, AZ-400 or AI-102)
