Senior Software Engineer (Python, AI-first funded startup)
The company
A product company in Amsterdam, around 15 people, building commerce software for independent business owners. Their customers run small operations with thin margins, so the product has to actually work. Orders that don't get lost, stock that stays in sync, a storefront that loads.
They're funded and past the experimental phase. This is the year the engineering team gets built out properly.
What you'd work on
The centre of gravity is the commerce product, and there's a lot of it:
- The storefront and how products are managed
- Order management and the workflows behind it
- Keeping products and orders in sync with the other systems merchants use
- Integrations with tools their customers already run
- A native tablet app used on-site by their customers' staff — nobody in the team has built native before, so that gets figured out together
- Loyalty and marketing tooling
A large part of the roadmap comes straight from what customers ask for, so not everything is predictable.
How the team works
- You work with an AI agent close to 100% of the time. Writing code by hand is the exception, not the rule.
- What counts is the judgement to direct that agent well, and to spot when what comes back isn't good enough.
- Flat, and it stays that way. Small enough that standups stay short and nobody waits for permission.
- You get as much ownership as you need. That's not the same as deciding alone — see something that should change, make the case for it. Once there's agreement, it's yours.
What they're looking for
- Around 5 years of experience, spread across two or three companies rather than eight. Long enough somewhere to have lived with the consequences of your own decisions.
- Real decision-making experience. Not just picking between frameworks, but decisions about where a product goes, made after talking to product, operations and whoever else mattered.
- Proactive communication. You can take a half-formed idea, work out where the edges are, and turn it into something shippable.
- A feel for what makes code good. Patterns, structure, architecture, and how to make sure something holds up once real users touch it.
If you need a fully specified ticket before you start, this isn't the place.
The offer
- €85,000 to €115,000 depending on experience
- Participation in the stock option programme, one year cliff, standard vesting
- Three days a week in the office minimum
- Longer stretches working from abroad are not a problem — people in the team regularly spend weeks away with family
- Full-time only
Important to know
No IND sponsorship and no relocation support. You need to be based in the Netherlands already with full working rights.
