Job Summary
We are looking for a seasoned Solutions Architect (JAVA) to own the technical direction of our
Java-based Broker/Distributor Commission Management platform for insurance and financial
services clients. The platform manages the full distribution lifecycle — distributor and producer
administration, organisational and compensation hierarchies, licensing and credential compliance,
compensation schedules, selling agreements, transaction processing, and downstream debt and
payment management. This is a client-facing, ownership-driven role — you will own the product
development roadmap, translate client and regulatory requirements into concrete architectural and
delivery plans, lead client solutioning from discovery through go-live, and act as the primary point of
technical accountability for the customers using the platform.
You will partner with sales, delivery, product management, and engineering to shape what gets built
and how, while directly managing customer relationships — running requirement discussions,
resolving production and integration issues, and ensuring the roadmap reflects real client needs
across our insurance and broker/distributor client base.
Key Responsibilities
Product Development Roadmap Ownership
Own and continuously evolve the product development roadmap for the Java-based
broker/distributor commission management platform, balancing new client requirements,
technical debt, and platform scalability.
Translate business and regulatory requirements around distributor administration,
licensing/credential compliance, compensation calculation, agreements, and payment
processing into a prioritised, actionable engineering plan.
Define the target architecture — core data services, configurable rules and validators,
compensation calculation engines, and hierarchy/relationship models — and phase the
roadmap into releases aligned with client commitments and internal capacity.
Work with Product and Engineering leadership to sequence features (e.g., new
compensation schedule types, hierarchy structures, credential rules, payment/debt
workflows), track roadmap progress, and re-prioritise based on client feedback and delivery
constraints.
Identify technical risks and dependencies early — particularly around configuration-driven
customisation, data migration, and compensation calculation accuracy — and build
mitigation and contingency plans into the roadmap.
Client Solutioning
Lead solutioning for new and existing insurance/broker clients — running discovery
workshops, understanding existing distributor and compensation systems, and designing
end-to-end solutions covering distributor onboarding, hierarchy setup, credential/licensing
rules, compensation schedules, and agreements.
Architect solutions for broker commission workflows — producer and organisation
hierarchies, license/appointment/E&O tracking, compensation schedule design, selling
agreements and contract kits, transaction processing, and debt/payment settlement — using
Java and the platform's configuration-driven (XML/rules-based) architecture.
Design integrations with external systems such as policy administration systems,
licensing/regulatory data providers, and payment/ledger systems, including data load and
extract workflows.
Produce technical proposals, solution architecture diagrams, effort estimates, and
Statements of Work (SOW) in collaboration with sales and delivery teams.
Evaluate configure vs customise vs integrate options for each client requirement, and
recommend the most efficient path within the platform's rules-and-validators-driven
architecture.
Run technical workshops and enablement sessions to align client stakeholders on the
proposed solution and implementation approach.
Customer Handling
Act as the primary technical point of contact for insurance carrier and broker/agency client
stakeholders throughout the engagement lifecycle — from onboarding through steady-state
support.
Build trusted-advisor relationships with client technical teams and business stakeholders
(compensation/compliance operations, IT, and business leadership), including senior
contacts where relevant.
Own resolution of customer-raised technical issues, escalations, and integration queries —
including compensation calculation discrepancies, licensing/credential validation issues, and
data load/extract problems — coordinating with engineering and support teams as needed.
Gather ongoing customer feedback and feature requests (e.g., new compensation structures,
hierarchy changes, regulatory/licensing rule updates), and feed them back into the product
roadmap in a structured, prioritised manner.
Conduct periodic technical reviews and roadmap check-ins with key customers to maintain
alignment and manage expectations.
Requirements
15+ years of experience in software engineering and architecture, with significant time in a
client-facing Solutions Architect, technical product owner, or architecture leadership role.
Strong hands-on background in Java-based enterprise application development and
architecture, including configuration-driven/rules-based systems (XML-configured business
rules, validators, workflow engines).
Prior experience with broker/distributor commission management, incentive compensation,
or producer/agent management systems in insurance or financial services strongly preferred.
Working knowledge of insurance distribution concepts — producer/distributor hierarchies,
licensing and appointment compliance, errors & omissions (E&O) tracking, compensation
schedules, selling agreements, and commission/debt/payment processing.
Proven track record owning a product roadmap end-to-end — prioritising features, balancing
client demands against platform health, and shipping releases.
Experience designing integrations and data pipelines (batch data load/extract, REST APIs,
file-based interfaces) connecting commission platforms with policy administration,
licensing/regulatory, and payment/ledger systems.
Strong background in enterprise deployment models; exposure to cloud platforms (AWS,
Azure, or GCP) is a plus.
Excellent client-handling and communication skills — able to run discovery, present
architecture, and manage escalations with both technical and business stakeholders.
Experience authoring SOWs, architecture documents, and technical proposals.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
Nice to Have
Direct hands-on experience with a commercial broker/distributor or incentive compensation
management platform (e.g., SAP Commissions/Callidus, Xactly, Varicent, Oracle Incentive
Compensation, or similar).
Experience with rules-engine or validator-driven business logic frameworks, and XML-based
application configuration.
Direct experience in the insurance or InsurTech vertical (P&C, life, health, annuities, or
reinsurance), particularly on the distribution/producer side.
Familiarity with insurance regulatory/compliance considerations around producer licensing,
appointments, and continuing education (e.g., NAIC/state insurance department
requirements, or regional equivalents).
Familiarity with enterprise architecture frameworks such as TOGAF.
Track record of managing strategic client accounts worth $1M+ ARR.
