Intake Details:

  • They don't have a formal data warehouse, only date stores
  • Need a Sr level Data Engineer to build the data warehouse
  • MUST be hands on the keyboard and have the technical depth to build the EDW
  • Key person on the team to tackle this project, has support from leaders, but need someone who has done this
  • Experience in ANY integration platform - SSIS, Snaplogic, Mule, Boomi, etc. are nice to have too
  • Strong SQL skills PL/SQL and/or T-SQL
  • Good experience with APIs
  • Strong ETL/ELT experience any platform
  • Data sources come from Oracle Cloud ERP, Salesforce, Ellucian Student System, and others
  • PowerBI and OAC for analytics and reporting
  • University/Higher Ed a plus, but not required

JOB SUMMARY

The Senior Data Engineer is responsible for the architecture, design, development, integration, and support of enterprise data platforms and analytics solutions in a higher education environment. This role specializes in modern cloud and hybrid data ecosystems leveraging Oracle Cloud technologies, enterprise integration platforms, and business intelligence tools to support institutional reporting, analytics, operational efficiency, and strategic decision-making.

The Senior Data Engineer designs and maintains operational data stores (ODS), enterprise data warehouses (EDW), and data lake solutions across cloud and on-premises environments. The position partners closely with functional and technical teams across the university, including Enrollment Management, Registrar, Student Records, Student Life, Research, Institutional Reporting, Finance, Human Resources.

This position requires deep expertise in data integration, ETL/ELT development, database technologies, analytics platforms, cloud infrastructure, and higher education data ecosystems.

As a member of the IT Solutions (ITS) team, the senior engineer is expected to uphold the division's mission to "empower an agile, digital university and elevate technology as a strategic institutional asset" and contribute positively to a collaborative, human-centered, innovative, accountable, transparent, and inclusive culture within ITS.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to: Manager, Data Warehouse and Integrations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES - May include, but not limited to the following:

Data Architecture & Engineering

  • Design, develop, implement, and maintain enterprise operational data stores, data warehouses, data marts, and data lake architectures.
  • Build scalable and secure cloud and hybrid data solutions using Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and related Oracle data services.
  • Develop logical and physical data models to support enterprise analytics and reporting initiatives.
  • Architect data ingestion and transformation pipelines for structured and semi-structured data sources.
  • Design and implement enterprise data integration frameworks supporting batch, near real-time, and API-driven integrations.
  • Establish enterprise data standards, metadata management, and data governance practices.
  • Optimize database structures, partitioning strategies, indexing, and query performance for large-scale datasets.
  • Support modernization initiatives transitioning legacy on-prem data platforms to cloud-native architectures.

ETL / ELT Development & Integration

  • Design, develop, and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines using Oracle Integration Cloud (OIC), SnapLogic, SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), PL/SQL, T-SQL and other tools and technologies.
  • Develop reusable integration components, orchestration workflows, and automation frameworks.
  • Integrate enterprise applications including ERP, HCM, SIS, CRM, and third-party SaaS platforms.
  • Build and maintain API-based integrations using REST, SOAP, SFTP, and event-driven architectures.
  • Ensure data quality, reconciliation, transformation validation, and exception handling across enterprise integrations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex data integration and performance issues.

Analytics & Reporting

  • Support enterprise analytics and business intelligence initiatives using Power BI, Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC), and other SQL-based reporting platforms.
  • Develop curated datasets, semantic models, and reporting structures for institutional analytics.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to translate reporting and analytics requirements into scalable technical solutions.
  • Enable self-service analytics capabilities while maintaining governance and security standards.
  • Support KPI development, institutional dashboards, operational reporting, and executive analytics.

Cloud & Data Platform Administration

  • Support Oracle Cloud Infrastructure services related to analytics and data engineering.
  • Configure and maintain cloud storage, compute, networking, and database resources supporting enterprise data platforms.
  • Monitor system health, integration processing, data pipeline execution, and platform performance.
  • Implement security controls, encryption, auditing, backup, recovery, and disaster recovery processes.
  • Participate in cloud architecture reviews, capacity planning, and performance tuning initiatives.

Higher Education Data Support

  • Support integrations and analytics involving higher education systems such as Student Information Systems (SIS), ERP and Finance systems, Human Capital Management (HCM), Learning Management Systems (LMS), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Advancement and Alumni systems, and Research administration systems.
  • Support higher education data domains including student, academic, financial, HR, and institutional reporting data.
  • Support compliance and regulatory reporting requirements including state, federal, accreditation, and institutional reporting.

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Collaborate with cross-functional technical and functional teams across the university.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior developers, analysts, and data engineers.
  • Participate in architecture reviews, code reviews, and technical standards development.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, data dictionaries, process flows, and operational procedures.
  • Lead or participate in enterprise data and analytics projects.
  • Support Agile, DevOps, and CI/CD development practices where applicable.

EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, Information Technology, or in a related field. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

EXPERIENCE

8+ years of progressively responsible experience in data engineering, enterprise data warehousing, ETL development, analytics engineering, or equivalent.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - The following are essential:

  • Experience designing and supporting enterprise data warehouses, operational data stores, and cloud-based analytics platforms.
  • Experience supporting hybrid cloud and on-premises enterprise data ecosystems.
  • Ability to architect scalable enterprise data solutions.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise integration patterns and data lifecycle management.
  • Experience with Oracle Database and PL/SQL development, or SQL Server and T-SQL development, or equivalent tools and technologies.
  • Experience with database performance tuning, SQL query tuning and optimization.
  • Experience with data modeling and schema design.
  • Experience building and supporting Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), Operational Data Store (ODS) and Data Lakes using ETL/ELT methodologies.
  • Experience using Cloud & Integration Platforms such as Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), Oracle Integration Cloud (OIC), SnapLogic, SSIS, API integrations (REST/SOAP) and SFTP and file-based integrations.
  • Experience with analytics & reporting such as Power BI, Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC) or equivalent.
  • Understanding of SDLC and Agile methodologies
  • Understanding of version control and DevOps practices.
  • Understanding of cloud security concepts.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Desirable Skills & Abilities

  • Experience with Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP/HCM integrations and reporting.
  • Experience with higher education platforms such as Ellucian Colleague, Ellucian Banner, Oracle Fusion Cloud, Oracle EBS, PeopleSoft Campus Solutions, Workday Student or equivalent systems.
  • Experience with Oracle Autonomous Database (ATP/ADW).
  • Experience with OCI Data Integration, OCI Object Storage, or OCI Analytics services.
  • Experience with data quality, data governance and metadata management
  • Relevant Oracle, Microsoft, or cloud certifications preferred.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Knowledge of IPEDS reporting.
  • Knowledge of FERPA and HIPAA.
  • Knowledge of Texas Administrative Code (TAC 202).
