Description
Leidos is seeking a Sr. Software Development Engineer to join a dynamic team that builds the Federal Aviation Administration’s En‑Route Automation Modernization (ERAM) system, the core of the Next Generation Air Traffic Control System. The role focuses on enhancing ERAM’s middleware layer, FlightDeck, to support new system capabilities, upgrades, and increased air‑traffic flow.
FlightDeck Capabilities
- Real‑time programming on high‑availability systems
- Multi‑threaded programming
- Low‑level Linux OS customization, RPMs, firmware, and command‑line use
- Software‑hardware integration, NetApp, hardware, Ansible playbooks, and automation scripting
- Low‑level communication software (TCP/IP, UDP, SCTP)
- Support of common services used by ERAM application teams
- System maintenance concepts
Primary Responsibilities
- Modernize AT control by improving ERAM’s availability and performance.
- Support ERAM through hardware, OS, firmware, security, and CAS migrations with strong Linux OS knowledge.
- Optimize collaboration and decision‑making for flight controllers, air traffic control staff, and the airline industry.
- Develop FAA air‑traffic control software (Ada95/C++) on Unix/Linux, leveraging KSH, PERL, and Python for automation.
- Perform software development tasks required for the ERAM system.
- Coordinate solutions with Systems Engineering.
- Coordinate development of new capabilities and upgrades to common services via the FlightDeck API.
- Apply AI/ML concepts to improve software processes and capabilities.
Basic Qualifications
- Computer Science or Computer Engineering degree.
- Demonstrated software development skills and capabilities.
- Excellent verbal and communication skills.
- Flexibility to work across multiple programming languages.
- Strong debugging and problem‑solving abilities.
- Desire to learn and improve technical competencies.
- 4–8 years of experience in a computer‑science related position (outside academia).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a technical organization performing software engineering tasks.
- Prior software experience with air‑traffic control programs.
- Leadership skills and experience.
Pay Range
$87,100.00 – $157,450.00 (general guideline; actual compensation may vary based on responsibilities, experience, and market data).
