Position Overview We are seeking a Staff Java Engineer with deep expertise in Claude and AI-assisted development to support our Payment Business Unit's Workflow Intelligence and Optimization Initiative.
This role operates within an AI-native delivery model, where you will leverage tools like Claude to generate full-stack production code, take complete ownership of code reviews, and drive execution. You will lead backend Java microservices development for scalable enterprise workflow orchestration systems (e.g., Appian) and frequently present technical strategies to Executive Leadership.
Key Responsibilities - AI-Native Engineering: Utilize Claude and secondary AI tools to rapidly generate, refactor, review, and ship production-ready, full-stack code (backend services, APIs, workflows, tests).
- Architecture & Leadership: Define standards, design patterns, and microservices architecture for workflow-centric backend solutions using Java and Spring Boot/Cloud.
- Workflow Orchestration: Partner with platform engineers to design APIs and integrate Java services with workflow platforms like Appian.
- Integrations & Performance: Build enterprise system integrations via RESTful APIs and event-driven patterns. Optimize relational databases (PostgreSQL/Oracle) and caching layers (Redis/Memcached).
- Executive Communication & Mentorship: Present progress and technical vision to Executive Leadership while mentoring junior engineers, leading code reviews, and promoting engineering excellence.
- DevOps Alignment: Collaborate across security, infrastructure, and product teams to support CI/CD pipelines, DevSecOps practices, and automated testing.
Qualifications Required - AI Expertise: Demonstrated, hands-on professional experience generating full-stack code using Claude, Copilot, or Cursor.
- Experience: 7+ years in enterprise application development, with at least 5+ years specializing in Java.
- Core Tech Stack: Deep proficiency in Spring Boot / Spring Cloud, RESTful APIs, and relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred, Oracle).
- Architecture: Strong track record in microservices design, API integration, and system security.
- Workflow Exposure: Familiarity with integrating Java backends into workflow orchestration platforms (e.g., Appian).
- Communication: Exceptional verbal and written presentation skills suited for Executive Leadership.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred - Advanced AI Workflows: Deep experience operating within a true AI-native delivery framework (end-to-end prompt-to-production lifecycle).
- BPM Platforms: Direct experience building extensions or integrations for Appian, Camunda, or JBPM.
- Domain Knowledge: Background in Healthcare IT, payment integrity, or payer systems.
- Methodologies: Experience within a SAFe Agile environment or a Workflow/Integration Center of Excellence (CoE).
