Senior Engineer, Resource Optimization & Algorithm, IRIS2

PROGRAMME description

IRIS² is the new European Union secure satellite communications constellation. This project is the European Union's answer to the pressing challenges of tomorrow to provide secure connectivity services and enhanced communication capacities to the EU and its Member States as well as to governmental users, private companies and European citizens while ensuring high-speed internet broadband to cope with connectivity dead zones.

SES – together with other consortium partners and core members – was selected by European Commission to build and to operate the IRIS² multi-orbit satellite constellation.

The IRIS² team enters the next project phase and there is a strong need for support for all the activities around service provisioning and products that the system can offer in the future.

Role description summary

Work requirements

The Resource Optimization and Algorithm Engineer is responsible for designing, modelling, simulating and validating optimization algorithms for radio, transport, feeder-link, inter-satellite link and gateway resource allocation in a 5G-NTN multi-orbit satellite system. The role supports MCC/SMO orchestration by developing algorithms for capacity planning, routing, scheduling, congestion avoidance, contingency handling, handover support and SLA-driven service continuity. The engineer combines classical and advanced optimization techniques with 5G-NTN system knowledge to support practical resource orchestration decisions across RAN, satellite payload, feeder links, ISLs and gateways.

General work requirements

  • Design, model and validate optimization algorithms for radio, transport, gateway, feeder-link and ISL resource allocation in 5G-NTN systems.

  • Develop resource allocation, routing, scheduling, capacity planning, congestion avoidance and contingency-handling algorithms for MCC/SMO orchestration use cases.

  • Model RAN resources, beams/cells, feeder links, ISLs, gateways, satellite visibility constraints, QoS, network slicing, traffic prioritization and SLA continuity requirements.

  • Simulate algorithm performance under nominal and degraded scenarios, including mobility, handover support, gateway congestion, ISL constraints, feeder-link limitations and traffic demand variations.

  • Provide algorithmic input to architecture studies, trade-off analyses, RFP/RFQ technical content, vendor evaluation, integration planning and system performance assessments.
