The Position

This is a full-time role reporting to the Head of Engineering. The role contributes to all stages of the software development life cycle, including design and requirements breakdown, architecture and technical solutioning, code analysis/refactoring, application development, and documentation. Strong full-stack capabilities are desired, but developers with strong experience on either the front-end or back-end and an interest in full-stack are welcome to apply.

Work Location: Hybrid model with offices in Calgary and Toronto. Time is spent both remotely and in offices, and candidates should be able to regularly work in either location.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the software development life cycle with a focus on high-quality code and delivering tasks across the application.
  • Contribute to design and technical solutioning, quantify tech debt, and provide estimates and priorities.
  • Produce high-quality, functional, tested, and maintainable code that meets business requirements.
  • Develop an understanding of the company’s software products from a technical perspective (architecture, design patterns, code structure).
  • Collaborate with others to review code, share knowledge, and promote best practices within the team.
  • Involvement in software implementation processes as required, such as client delivery.
  • Mentor and collaborate with team members including junior developers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent.
  • 4+ years developing dynamic web-based applications in a professional environment.
  • Experience with front-end development including:
    • Strong knowledge of TypeScript and best practices.
    • Front-end development using common frameworks (Angular/React).
    • Experience with recent versions of Angular or willingness to work with Angular.
  • Experience with back-end development including:
    • Knowledge of Java/Kotlin or similar languages.
    • Experience with frameworks like Spring/Spring Boot.
    • Experience with relational databases and ORMs.
  • Strong focus on quality including code quality, unit testing, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; a self-starter comfortable with complex systems and a broad range of responsibilities.

Nice to Have

  • Understanding of AWS cloud services.
  • Exposure to or experience with:
    • Node.js / Express.js with NoSQL databases.
    • Data visualization and data analytics libraries and tools.
  • Exposure to Apache Spark, Scala, or Python.
  • Familiarity with electrical engineering concepts and terminology.
  • Interest or exposure to machine learning tools and workloads.
  • Experience building/maintaining multi-tenant product environments, data management, and migrations.
  • Contribution to open-source projects or libraries.
