Java Backend Engineer
About the role
As a Java Backend Engineer , you will make an impact by designing and developing scalable backend services that power high-performance, customer-facing banking applications. You will be a valued member of an Agile engineering team and collaborate closely with product owners, architects, and cross‑functional stakeholders to deliver secure, reliable, and cloud‑native solutions.

In this role, you will:
- Design, develop, and maintain Java-based microservices and RESTful APIs aligned with modern design principles
- Contribute to scalable and fault‑tolerant system architecture, supporting high‑volume applications
- Build and deploy applications on cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or OpenShift) using containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Integrate services into CI/CD pipelines and improve automation, deployment speed, and reliability
- Ensure high‑quality code through testing, code reviews, and adherence to security and performance standards

Based on this role’s business requirements, this is a hybrid position requiring 4 days a week in a client office in Toronto, ON. What you need to have to be considered
- 7+ years of experience in Java development (Spring Boot, microservices architecture)
- Strong experience in REST API design and development
- Hands‑on experience with Git-based version control and CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions)
- Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or OpenShift)
- Expertise in containerization using Docker and Kubernetes
- Strong understanding of software engineering best practices, design patterns, and scalable architecture
These will help you stand out
- Experience with monitoring and observability tools such as Splunk or Dynatrace
- Familiarity with AI‑assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot)
- Experience working in Agile environments and participating in Agile ceremonies
- Exposure to frontend technologies such as Angular
- Ability to mentor junior engineers and contribute to sharing knowledge
Canadian Pay Transparency Statement
We regularly assess market data to ensure we offer a competitive compensation package for our associates. The base salary for this position ranges between $ 61,650 – $91,000 per year. Where the successful candidate may fall within the range depends on relevant education, work and/or management experience and other business‑related and job‑necessary qualifications. This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual performance‑based bonus, as well as benefits that support your physical, mental and financial wellbeing.
