HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world, with operations in 64 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and, ultimately, helping people to fulfil their hopes and realise their ambitions.

We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Sr. Associate Director, Software Engineering Specialist

QORE (Quantitative Oversight Risk and Evaluation) is an internal platform that manages the full lifecycle of quantitative models — from identification and development through validation, approval, and ongoing monitoring. It supports regulatory compliance with the bank’s Three Lines of defense governance model.

We’re looking for a engineering lead to design, build, and operate microservices that power critical model risk management workflows used by validators, model owners, and risk committees globally

In this role, you will:

  • Design and deliver features across a suite of 8+ Spring Boot microservices using hexagonal architecture (ports & adapters) and CQRS patterns.
  • Build and maintain domain-driven services covering model inventory, validation lifecycle, workflow orchestration, monitoring, and approvals.
  • Implement and evolve BPMN/DMN workflows using Flowable for complex multi-step approval and validation processes.
  • Own inter-service communication via Open Feign clients, ensuring resilience and clean API contracts.
  • Write and maintain database migrations (Liquibase) and optimize PostgreSQL queries across a database-per-service topology.
  • Collaborate with business analysts, model validators, and risk stakeholders to translate regulatory requirements into software.
  • Contribute to platform evolution — service extraction, legacy migration, and architectural improvements.
  • Maintain high code quality through automated testing, SonarQube, and peer review.

To be successful in this role, you should meet the following requirements:

  • 15+ years of backend development in Java (17+, ideally 21). Strong experience with Spring Boot, Spring Data JPA, and Spring Cloud. Solid understanding of microservice architecture — service decomposition, API design, inter-service communication patterns.
  • Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL — schema design, query optimization, migrations. Familiarity with CQRS or similar read/write separation patterns.Experience with RESTful API design and OpenAPI/Swagger. Working experience with GCP and GKE — Cloud SQL, Pub/Sub, Kubernetes deployments, namespaces, health checks, and Helm charts for release management.
  • Proficiency with Git (trunk-based development, branching strategies, code reviews) and CI/CD pipelines (build, test, deploy automation). Exposure to automated test frameworks such as REST Assured, Playwright, or similar — comfortable writing and maintaining unit, integration, and end-to-end test suites.
  • Experience with Flowable, Camunda, or similar BPMN/DMN workflow engines.Familiarity with hexagonal architecture (ports & adapters) in practice. Exposure to Feign or declarative HTTP clients. Experience with Liquibase or Flyway for schema versioning.
  • Experience with event-driven architecture (Pub/Sub, Kafka). Familiarity with Maven multi-module builds and shared library management.
  • Background in financial services, risk management, or regulatory technology. Understanding of model risk management concepts (model validation, tiering, governance).
  • Experience migrating or modernizing legacy platforms.

You’ll achieve more when you join HSBC.
