The role

As a Senior Software Developer on the Admin Platform team in Calgary, AB, you will work in a hybrid model (requiring 2 days a week in the Calgary office) to design, build, and operate the core services underpinning Evo, Seequent's cloud-based geoscience platform. Reporting to the Team Lead, Software Development, you will focus primarily on building highly reliable and scalable backend systems using Python, FastAPI, Kubernetes, and GCP, while occasionally contributing to frontend administrative interfaces. In this role, you will work under general direction to solve moderately complex problems, participate in release planning, and provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior team members. Given Seequent's global presence, you will maintain flexibility to collaborate across different time zones and occasionally provide Tier 3 after-hours support.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop Core Services: Design, code, and operate scalable backend microservices responsible for data organization, permission management, auditability, and third-party integrations.
  • Lead Software Design: Create robust design views addressing functional, non-functional, and security requirements, evaluate trade-offs, and recommend best-in-class solutions.
  • Support Frontend & Platform Needs: Contribute to modern frontend platforms to build administrative and platform-level features.
  • Own Release Management: Partner with teams to plan, schedule, and execute releases, performing rigorous quality assurance and testing to ensure platform reliability.
  • Mentor & Collaborate: Provide guidance and conduct collaborative code and design reviews for junior team members to help them grow.
  • Drive Continuous Improvement: Apply research, integrate emerging technologies (such as AI-assisted workflows), and optimize software development and deployment processes.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, And Experience

  • Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or an equivalent field, with 5+ years of experience in relevant software engineering roles.
  • Backend & API Expertise: Proven experience designing, building, and maintaining scalable RESTful APIs, preferably using Python and FastAPI.
  • Cloud & Containers: Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, or Azure) and deploying microservices in containerized environments (Kubernetes).
  • Infrastructure & CI/CD: Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform) and designing, maintaining, and automating CI/CD pipelines.
  • Testing & Quality: Experience writing automated tests across multiple layers (unit, integration, end-to-end) using tools like Pytest and Playwright.
  • Frontend Familiarity: Basic understanding of modern frontend technologies (e.g., React, TypeScript) to contribute to administrative interfaces.
  • Professional Attributes: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent communication, a collaborative team mindset, and interest in emerging development practices like AI-assisted or agent-driven workflows.
