Sigma Systems Inc. is seeking a Remote Software Engineer – Full Stack Developer (Mainframe) to join an Agile software engineering team responsible for designing, developing, and delivering scalable enterprise software solutions supporting digital healthcare platforms.
Position Details
Job Title: Remote Software Engineer – Full Stack Developer (Mainframe)
Duration: 6-Month Contract
Location: 100% Remote
Schedule: Monday–Friday, Normal Business Hours (No preference for East Coast or local candidates)
Travel: Up to 25% (Occasional)

Job Summary
This position is an integral member of an Agile software engineering team responsible for building complex, scalable enterprise software applications across digital channels. The engineer will take an enterprise-wide architectural approach to designing and developing solutions using the technologies best suited to the platform.
The successful candidate will participate in every phase of the software development lifecycle, including idea generation, business analysis, technical design, software development, testing, deployment, and production support while working closely with cross-functional Agile teams.
Candidates must have hands-on Mainframe/COBOL development experience.
Essential Responsibilities
Design and create engineering specifications for enterprise software applications.
Design, develop, and maintain high-quality code that adheres to established coding standards.
Perform peer code reviews and promote software engineering best practices.
Evaluate business requirements and recommend scalable technical solutions that optimize functionality, performance, and maintainability.
Participate in all Agile/Scrum ceremonies including sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
Create user stories, Definition of Done (DoD), acceptance criteria, estimates, and development tasks using Jira, RTC, or similar Agile tools.
Monitor work against project schedules and communicate progress, risks, blockers, and technical issues to development leads and Scrum Masters.
Translate business requirements, prototypes, and user stories into production-ready software applications.
Mentor junior software engineers and support their technical development.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Education Required
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.
Preferred
Master's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
Required Experience
Mandatory
Hands-on experience with Mainframe technologies, including COBOL (required).
Completion of the Glider Assessment – Senior Application Developer (Mainframe) (Highmark-10165051) prior to submission.
Technical Experience
3+ years of experience designing scalable, highly available enterprise applications using algorithms, data structures, and design patterns.
3+ years of experience with one or more of the following:
Java
Python
JavaScript
ACE
IIB/ITX
Informatica
Experience with at least two of the following technologies:
React
Angular (v4+)
Node.js
NoSQL Databases
HTML5
CSS
Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
Amazon Web Services (AWS)
3+ years of experience developing and consuming RESTful web services using REST, HTTPS, and JSON.
Preferred Experience
5+ years of experience with one or more general-purpose programming languages including Java, Python (Django/Flask), JavaScript, Go, C#, C++, or Objective-C.
5+ years of experience defining enterprise system architectures and evaluating technical feasibility and long-term scalability.
5+ years of experience designing solutions or developing applications within the healthcare industry.
5+ years of experience translating design mockups, prototypes, and user stories into production-ready applications.
5+ years of experience producing fault-tolerant, scalable, efficient, and maintainable code.
Skills
Demonstrated ability to achieve stretch goals in a highly innovative and fast-paced environment.
Strong experience working within Agile/Scrum development methodologies.
Ability and willingness to learn new programming languages and technologies.
