ABOUT THE ROLE
The Visualization Engineer is responsible for designing, engineering, and optimising high-performance, business-ready analytical and visualisation solutions using Power BI. This role focuses on visual engineering, semantic modelling, and performance optimisation to enable confident, data-driven decision-making at scale.
The role applies strong data fundamentals, advanced DAX and SQL, and visual design discipline to deliver intuitive, performant, and reusable analytical experiences. It also supports the integration of advanced analytics and machine-learning outputs into enterprise dashboards.
Key Accountabilities
Visualization Engineering & Analytical Experience Design
- Design and engineer high-performance Power BI dashboards focused on usability and insight-driven storytelling.
- Deliver executive-level analytical experiences using drill-throughs, tooltips, bookmarks, and dynamic measures.
- Develop visual design standards, templates, and layout patterns.
- Translate business needs into intuitive visual solutions.
Semantic Modelling & Performance Optimisation
- Design semantic models using dimensional and star schema best practices.
- Develop and maintain complex DAX measures.
- Optimise performance using aggregations, incremental refresh, and composite models.
- Diagnose and resolve report and dataset performance issues.
Data & SQL Capability
- Write and optimise advanced SQL queries (joins, CTEs, window functions).
- Work with large enterprise datasets.
- Partner with data engineering teams to support analytical requirements.
Business Engagement & Stakeholder Collaboration
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define KPIs and success metrics.
- Translate ambiguous requirements into analytical solutions.
- Communicate insights effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
Advanced Analytics & Machine Learning Enablement
- Integrate ML outputs such as forecasts and predictions into Power BI dashboards.
- Demonstrate understanding of ML concepts including classification, regression, and anomaly detection.
- Ensure responsible interpretation of advanced analytics outputs.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
Essential Experience
- 4–8 years experience in analytics, BI, or visualisation-focused engineering roles.
- Proven Power BI expertise across visualisation, modelling, and performance optimisation.
- Strong stakeholder engagement experience.
Technical Skills
- Power BI (Desktop & Service), advanced DAX, Power Query.
- Dimensional modelling and semantic layer design.
- Advanced SQL and query optimization.
- Experience with Azure SQL, Fabric, Synapse, Databricks or similar platforms.
Qualifications & Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience.
- Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300) or equivalent.
- Fabric, Analytics Engineer, or Azure AI certifications preferred.
